New York Deaths Behind Bars - Sources

  • UCLA Law Behind Bars Data Project – This project collects and analyzes public information about carceral mortality  in prisons, jails, youth facilities, and immigration detention centers across the United States. The project’s centralized source of data enables greater oversight of and accountability for carceral institutions. This project, started in March 2020, initially focused on the impact of COVID behind bars and February 2023 announced a new phase for the project expanding the scope to deaths from all causes. New York specific data is available here.
  • The Correctional Association of New York (CANY) – CANY is mandated by law to provide independent oversight of New York State prisons. As part of this mandate, CANY systematically compiles data on the state prison system and makes it publicly accessible through dashboards, processed data, and source data. The CANY dashboard includes statistical data on deaths of individuals incarcerated in DOCCS facilities. The datasets used in this dashboard, along with relevant documentation, can be found on the page titled ‘Data for Download’ in the ‘Data’ menu. This data is updated regularly to ensure policymakers and the public have the most current information for understanding conditions in New York’s prisons.
